RESTAURANTS, bars and cafes across Northern Ireland were yesterday able to sign up to a new government scheme offering half-price meals to diners in August.

The application process for the initiative went live in a move that is hoped will kickstart the recovery of the struggling hospitality industry.

Many businesses across the north have been severely affected by the coronavirus lockdown, with many staff placed on furlough. But last week, British chancellor Rishi Sunak unveiled the 'Eat Out to Help Out' scheme to help support the industry and its employees.

Diners will be able to get 50 per cent off meals, with the discount capping at £10 per head - the half of the bill not paid by the customer will be covered by the government.

The scheme, which will include food and non-alcoholic drinks and apply to both adults and children, had been described as "significant" by Hospitality Ulster.

Customers eating out every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from August 3 to 31 will be able to avail of the discounts.

While it has been described as a food voucher scheme, diners will not need to present a voucher or code to redeem the discount - participating establishments will automatically deduct it from their bill.

Within five working days the money will be reimbursed directly into the bank account of the business.

The offer means that a family of four could save up to £40 on a meal out, with that £40 being paid for by the government.

There is no limit on how many times members of the public can get a discounted meal, as long as they are visiting a restaurant that has registered for the scheme.

In order to run the scheme, restaurants, bars and cafes need to register with the government, with the online process opening yesterday.

Chains including Nando's and Pizza Hut have already signed up.

The government is also issuing posters for businesses to put up in windows or on tables to inform customers that the discount is available.

The posters feature the brightly coloured 'Eat Out to Help Out' logo and state: "Welcome back - we've missed you! Come in, relax and enjoy up to £10 off food and non-alcoholic drinks per person".

There is also a range of digital posters for businesses to share online or on social media posts - with all posters free for restaurants, cafes and bars to use.

The businesses registered will be able to claim the money back from the government between August 7 and September 30, with reimbursements to be received within five working days through an online service supported by HM Revenue and Customs.

Only restaurants that offer dine-in service are eligible to register, which means discounts are not available for takeaway-only restaurants, mobile food vans or private catering services.
