A Co Down pastor left seriously ill after contracting coronavirus has said medics hope he can be discharged from hospital within days.

Mark McClurg (40), of Ards Elim Church, spent the past week in intensive care at the Ulster Hospital.

The father-of-three told earlier this week how he struggled to breathe after being struck by Covid-19, saying the virus was "sucking the life out of my lungs."

But in an emotional video posted to his Twitter account yesterday, Mr McClurg said he has "some really good news".

"My consultant today came in and said the only thing keeping me in the Ulster Hospital now is the oxygen," he said.

"If I can get weaned off the oxygen on Sunday, I'm good to go home on Monday."

He thanked the "amazing NHS staff".

"I just want to take this opportunity once again to thank all the staff in the Ulster Hospital who have helped me and saved my life - thank you so much for all your hard work."

He also thanked his church community and for others for praying for him.
