A 20-year-old man has died following a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the Westlink in Belfast.

The man from the Newtownabbey area of Co Antrim died after a collision shortly after midnight.

It happened between Divis Street and Grosvenor Road.

PSNI Inspector Anne McCourt asked for anyone who was driving on the Westlink from around 12.30am and 12.50am to contact police at Woodbourne on the non-emergency number 101.

SDLP councillor Noreen McClelland extended her condolences to the man’s relatives.

“I offer my sympathies to the family, it is tragic news at this time,” she said.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that a cyclist killed in Dublin after a collision with a Luas tram in the early hours of Sunday was Cormac Ó Braonáin, the recently elected Labour Youth chairperson.

The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Peters Place on Charlemont Bridge, was also a member of the SDLP.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said he was “shocked and deeply sorry” to hear of Mr Ó Braonáin’s death.

“Cormac travelled to Belfast just a fortnight ago to campaign in the Westminster election,” the Foyle MP said.

“He was a tireless young activist with a genuine belief in a new and socially just Ireland. I am thinking of Cormac’s family and friends today.”

Labour Party Leader, Brendan Howlin has expressed his deep sadness and grief on hearing of the “tragic and untimely death”.

“On behalf of the Labour Party I want to express my deepest sympathy and sadness to his parents Lughaidh and Eva, and their family on the tragic loss of their son Cormac who had already done so much in his life to date,” he said.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident in which Mr Ó Braonáin died.

At around the same time, a man in his twenties died in Cork in a single vehicle collision on Glenville Road in Ballincrokig.

The vehicle left the road and hit a wall.
