SINN Féin will next week decide which of its councillors will become the new Lord Mayor of Belfast.

John Finucane has already left the top post after becoming an MP.

He becomes one of the shortest-serving mayors having only been elected to the council for the first time in May.

Mr Finucane's profile has been removed from Belfast City Council's website.

With 18 councillors, Sinn Féin is the largest party represented at Belfast City Hall.

Two of its members, Arder Carson and Deirdre Hargey, have previously worn the mayoral chains.

The party is yet to reveal which councillor will be selected.

It is the first time in more than 100 years that a lord mayor has not served a full year.

Mr Finucane is the second councillor in recent years to be elected as an MP while holding the lord mayor post.

Alliance leader Naomi Long won in east Belfast in May 2010, having become just the second female mayor of the city in June 2009.

She served her full year due to there being no bar at that time on dual mandates.

A Belfast City Council spokesman confirmed a new lord mayor would be appointed.

"The party responsible for nominating an elected representative to lord mayor will do so next week. This party is Sinn Féin," he said.

"The party will also co-opt an elected representative to the now vacant council seat in north Belfast."
