ONE of Co Tyrone's best-known characters has passed away at the age of 102.

Pat Gillespie was an ambassador for his home town of Strabane where he held the honour of Grand Marshall of the annual St Patrick's Day parade.

He was known for his car and bicycle collection and was a familiar sight around the town on his engine-powered bike.

Two years ago he was subjected to a terrifying robbery ordeal after three masked men forced their way into his home.

In the days following the incident Mr Gillespie received hundreds of cards and messages of support from across the world.

Pat and his late wife Eileen had eight children.

Among those paying tribute on social media was SDLP MLA Daniel McCrossan, describing Mr Gillespie as "a wonderful, kind and friendly man. A Strabane man heart and soul and a character to the end".
