A west Belfast man who killed a mother-of-seven in a drunken car smash almost 20 years ago has died.

Charlie Barrett, who was sentenced to seven years in jail for killing community nurse, Maureen Sheehan, was found on July 25 at a flat in Divis Street in the Falls Road area. The cause of death is not known.

Charlie Barrett, who was in his forties, was more than two-and-a-half times over the drink-driving limit and driving on the wrong side of the road at 60mph when he crashed into Mrs Sheehan's car on the Falls Road in April 2000.

Mrs Sheehan had just completed her regular house visits and was on her way to Sunday morning Mass at St Peter's Cathedral when she was killed.

It later emerged that Barrett had been disqualified from driving two weeks before the crash and had a series of other convictions, mainly for motoring offences.

A wellbeing centre - the Maureen Sheehan Centre in Albert Street, off the lower Falls - was opened in her memory in 2014.

Two of Mrs Sheehan's sons are priests, Fr Pat Sheehan and Fr Michael Sheehan.
