A 22-YEAR-OLD man remained critically ill in hospital yesterday after suffering a serious head injury in a 'one punch' attack at a Co Down beach.

It happened on Thursday at about 7.30pm on Tyrella beach near the coastal village of Killough.

A 21-year-old man was arrested by police. He remained in custody yesterday assisting officers with their enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Darren McCartney said: "These 'one punch' incidents have a hugely destructive impact on both victim and perpetrator and the consequences can be devastating, completely altering the lives of all concerned."

He appealed for any witnesses to phone police on 101.

Tyrella is a Blue Flag-awarded beach which is a popular destination enjoyed by families and holidaymakers.

SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath described the incident as "worrying" and urged anyone with information to "bring it forward to the PSNI".

Sinn Féin councillor Oonagh Hanlon also encouraged any witnesses to contact police.

"It is worrying to hear of an incident at local tourist attraction Tyrella beach which has left a man critically injured," he said.

"This incident must have been distressing for those involved and bystanders witnessing the incident.

"These areas of local beauty are visited and enjoyed by locals and many visitors to the area and this behaviour would not be commonplace."

Hugh Gallagher, an SDLP councillor, also urged people to contact police with any information.

"Tyrella beach is a beautiful part of our landscape. In these summer months it is enjoyed by locals, families and holidaymakers from all over," he said.

"In times of summer weather we can expect the beach to be absolutely packed with people who want to enjoy it."
