A FORMER DUP MLA suspended from the party this week says he is considering taking legal action.

Causeway Coast and Glens councillor Adrian McQuillan was told by party officials that he has been suspended from the party for six months.

Mr McQuillan won a seat for the DUP in the Bann district area last month along with party colleague Michelle Knight-McQuillan

The DUP ran three candidates in the area but sitting councillor Sam Cole failed to regain a seat.

It is understood the decision to suspend Mr McQuillan is linked to the electioneering activities of candidates leading up to last month’s local elections and centres on the erection of posters.

A former MLA, Mr McQuillan sat as an assembly member until 2017 before losing his seat.

Mr McQuillan, who works two days a week in the Coleraine office of East Derry MP Gregory Campbell, said he will seek legal advice to establish if there are grounds to appeal the decision.

“I am disappointed at the outcome, with the whole thing and the way I have been treated,” he said.

“I think I have been treated unfairly.”

A spokesman for the DUP said: “We don’t comment on internal party matters."
