AN "inspiration both as a character and as a businessman" was among the hundreds of tributes paid to Derek Patterson last night as messages of condolence continued to pour in following his sudden death.

A prominent figure in Northern Ireland's hospitality scene, his sudden death has left family, friends and customers stunned.

The 53-year-old co-owner of the Hillsborough-based Plough Group of restaurants and well respected chef was found dead close to his home in Hillsborough on Tuesday.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

The married father-of-four worked in restaurants around the world, including Bermuda and Switzerland, before he returned to Northern Ireland in the 1990s and joined the family business.

A founder of the Hillsborough International Oyster Festival, his business interests included The Plough in Hillsborough, the Pheasant in Annahilt and the Tannery near Moira.

A message posted on The Plough Inn Facebook page said it was "with great sadness that we confirm the sudden passing of Derek Patterson".

"Whilst the Patterson family appreciates your kind thoughts and condolences, they would be grateful for some privacy at this difficult time," it added.

Many people expressed their shock at Mr Patterson's death on The Plough Inn Facebook page.

One man described him as "one of life’s true gents and inspirational figures", while another added that he was a "genuine nice guy, talented, generous and will be sorely missed".

Another tribute said he was a "man ahead of his time...a huge loss to the industry"

Another friend wrote: "Was an honour and privilege to call him a friend. Will be sadly missed by the tourism industry. Thoughts and prayers with the family."

Mr Patterson is survived by his wife Pamela, children Max, Natasha, Toby and Amelia, parents Desmond and Muriel and brothers William and Richard.

Funeral arrangements had last night not been announced.
