Former 1968 All Ireland winning Down GAA team reunite for 80th birthday celebrations

THERE was a touch of sporting nostalgia in Co Down recently when a number of legends from the 1968 All-Ireland winning Down GAA team reunited for a special celebration.

More than 50 years after winning their coveted All-Ireland medals, the much-talked about former team mates gathered together in the Burrendale Hotel in Newcastle to celebrate the 80th birthday of Dan McCartan.

The former footballer is a retired dentist whose practice was based for many years on the Andersonstown Road in west Belfast.

The team, which emerged triumph in the famous All-Ireland final against Kerry in Croke Park in Dublin, can be seen gathered around a table decorated with red and black balloons.
