CHIEF Nursing Officer Charlotte McArdle has been appointed chair of a steering group to develop a 10-year cancer strategy for Northern Ireland.

She warned yesterday that the projected rise in cancer cases is "one of the biggest challenges facing our health service", ahead of a meeting with people who have "lived experience" of the disease, as well as charities, medics and senior health service managers.

The strategy was commissioned in March by Department of Health chief Richard Pengelly and he said the appointment "underlines the priority we are attaching to this work".

It is to be completed by June 2020.
