BELFAST International Airport has said it is investigating after a brawl broke out among passengers who attacked each other with objects including mops and metal poles.

Footage was captured and posted online by shocked air travellers in the departures area on Saturday evening.

It shows people being attacked with makeshift weapons and missiles such as mops and a fire extinguisher.

At least one shopping basket taken from a shop was also thrown.

Witnesses said the dispute began in a bar before spilling out into a seating area where shocked passengers waiting to board flights ran to avoid the violence.

One of those who filmed the clashes described the scene as "absolute mayhem".

Belfast International Airport said: "An altercation between two groups of passengers occurred on Saturday evening in the airside departures area.

"Both the airport police and PSNI were in attendance and the incident has since been resolved. An investigation into the incident is now ongoing."

It was reported that some people involved did not travel following the incident but it is not known if any arrests were made.

Police were said to have arrived after three minutes, with the incident lasting seven minutes in total.

A PSNI spokesman said it "provided assistance to airport police following a report of an incident at Belfast International Airport yesterday evening. The matter is being dealt with by airport police."
