AN ELDERLY Cookstown man is to stand trial on historical sexual abuse charges involving a female child, dating back over 40 years.

Hugh Brendan Conlan (77), of Orritor Street, is accused of two offences on dates between 1976 and 1979.

These involve the alleged indecent assault of the complainant, as well as gross indecency towards a child.

The accused attended a committal hearing yesterday at Dungannon Magistrates Court.

A lawyer appearing for the Public Prosecution Service told the court there is a case to answer, which was agreed by District Judge Paul Copeland.

Mr Conlan spoke only to confirm his name and that he understood the charges.

He declined to call witnesses or give evidence on his own behalf during the short hearing.

Judge Copeland remanded Mr Conlan on £500 bail and ordered him to appear for arraignment at Dungannon Crown Court on October 16.
