THE Russell Court Hotel opened in August 1972 on the site of a terrace on Belfast's Lisburn Road.

Just a month later, a large bomb caused significant damage. Four armed men had driven a television repair vehicle into the 12-storey building's underground garage.

It remained closed until May 1973 when business started again but on a limited basis.

It then sustained further damage in another bomb in 1976 and never reopened.

After lying disused for years, it was acquired by the Belfast Improved Homes housing association, which converted the upper floors to apartments with the lower floors developed into retail and office space.

Belfast Community Radio, which was replaced by CityBeat - now Q Radio - broadcast from the basement between 1990 and 1996.

Bob Cratchit's pub occupied the bottom floor.

In February 1994, Jack Smyth (23) from Leopold Street in north Belfast was shot dead by the INLA at the door of the pub.

The attack took place at a time when the bar was packed with customers. The INLA claimed the doorman was a UFF member but an RUC detective told his inquest that Mr Smyth had "absolutely no connection" with any paramilitary group.
