HUNDREDS of mourners have attended the funeral of a Co Down man who lost his life in a road accident last week.

Karl Heaney (27) died on Wednesday night when his silver Ford Fusion was in a collision with another vehicle on the A1 dual carriageway.

The 27-year-old was making his way back to Belfast from GAA training with his club Newry Mitchel’s when the collision took place between Banbridge and Dromore at around 11.30pm.

Some mourners, including his mother Monica, wore Liverpool FC tops as his remains were brought to St Mary’s Church in Newry for Requiem Mass yesterday.

A guard of honour also walked along the hearse as his remains arrived at the church.

A former pupil at Abbey Grammar School, Mr Heaney was an avid Liverpool fan who worked as a classroom assistant at Aquinas Grammar School in Belfast and was due to begin a teaching course in London.

Newry Mitchel’s paid tribute to the keen sportsman.

“He will missed by everyone who knew him within our club and far beyond and his loss will leave a huge void in the many lives he touched,” the club said.

Mr Heaney was later buried at Monkshill Cemetery.
