THERE have been calls for the Orange Order to expel a member jailed for driving into pedestrians at a north Belfast interface.

John Aughey (63) was sentenced on Friday to a year in custody followed by 12 months on licence.

A jury had found him guilty of six offences at the Ardoyne shop fronts on July 13 2015.

Six people, some of them police officers, were injured after Aughey tried to make a U-turn.

Phoebe Clawson (16) was struck and thrown onto the bonnet before becoming trapped under his car.

She sustained fractures to her collarbone, pelvis and ankle. Police and other pedestrians lifted the car off her.

Asked on Friday whether the Orange Order was moving to expel Aughey, a spokesman said it “had no comment”.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Nichola Mallon said the Orange Order needed to act.

“Failure by the Orange Order to take any action in response to this conviction will give the impression that it views these actions as acceptable behaviour for its members,” she said.
