A WOMAN had to be airlifted to hospital after falling near the Giant’s Causeway.

The accident happened shortly before 2pm on Saturday when the woman fell on the Causeway Coast Path, between the Giant's Causeway and Dunsevrick.

Coastguard teams from Coleraine and Ballycastle were dispatched to the scene, along with a crew from the ambulance service.

The woman was airlifted to the Causeway Hospital in a helicopter sent from Prestwick in Scotland.

It is understood she suffered a lower leg injury and is in a stable condition.

Dawn Petrie from the Coastguard said the terrain were the accident happened made it necessary for a helicopter to be called.

"It was a relatively straightforward operation in so much as the casualty didn't have serious injuries," she said.

"The terrain where she fell and the distance from access points to the nearest vehicle would have been about a 45-minute carry-out with a stretcher. So that's why a helicopter was tasked."

Several people have been injured over recent months after falling on the north coast.

In May, a 12-year-old boy suffered leg and head injuries after falling 15 feet onto rocks at Castlerock.

Last month, a woman was also taken to hospital on a stretcher after falling on the rocks at the Giant's Causeway.
