SUE O'Connell has dedicated almost two decades of her life to tell the story of a man who became a revered figure in the history of Barcelona football club.

She said it had been a "fascinating" journey as she documented the life of player and manager Patrick O'Connell in a new book.

The author, who is married to Patrick's grandson Michael, said she began to research the story after she was forced to retire following an MS diagnosis.

Her access to documents, letters and family memories, along with research in England, Ireland, Spain and Mexico, have all been brought together in The Man Who Saved FC Barcelona, The Remarkable Life of Patrick O'Connell.

"When I had to retire, I thought 'what I can do the rest of my life'," she said.

"There was always the story in the family about the footballer, so I started bit by bit to research. The more I found out about him, the more I became intrigued.

"To go through and find out the detail to publishing has taken about 19 years, but it has been worth it."
