A west Belfast grandfather who was beaten unconscious after being dragged from his car in an unprovoked assault has said he fears the "evil" attacker could strike again.

Charlie Hill (72) was targeted in broad daylight in the Brooke Park area off Black's Road, just 30 metres from his front door, as he was making his way to the doctor's.

The father-of-three, who has survived bowel cancer, said he had just driven down the street at around 2pm on Wednesday when a man ran at his car, pulled open the door and punched him.

Mr Hill, a retired bus driver who has lived in Arlington Park for 45 years, said the attacker was "roaring and shouting".

He said he was punched in the face and knocked to the ground where he was repeatedly kicked in the head and around his body.

"I think I was knocked out temporarily," he said.

The attack only ended when a neighbour came across the assault.

Mr Hill, who is known for his charity work including raising £46,000 to buy a colonoscopy machine for the Royal Victoria Hospital, said he now fears the attacker could strike again.

"We have to get him off the road because he is going to kill somebody," he said.

"I have never been hit as hard. I have never seen evil in a man’s face as much before".

Mr Hill was left with head, ear and jaw injuries and underwent a brain scan.

He described his attacker as being aged between 35 and 40 and around 5ft 6/7in tall. He was wearing a grey monkey hat, a blue/navy jacket and jeans.

After the attack he walked along Black's Road, past the Balmoral Hotel.

Mr Hill's daughter Nuala said the family were "totally disgusted".

"This is a very q uiet community. It’s just beyond belief that anything like this can happen as you are driving out of your house".

She added: "The community has been so supportive. It's been unreal. The kindness has been overwhelming".

Police said investigations into the assault are still ongoing.
