A CO Tyrone business park, which has cost the taxpayer almost £6m but created no jobs, is still waiting for its first tenant.

The Strabane Business Park opened in 2013 and was designed to address a shortage of industrial land and be a catalyst for economic development, but in three years no businesses have taken up residence.

There were hopes that the Invest NI-owned venture was about to welcome its first resident after a planning application was lodged in August with Derry City and Strabane District Council, but economy minister Simon Hamilton has confirmed that no business has yet set up home at the Melmount Road site.

According to the planning application for the proposed factory unit, consultations have been issued, but no further information is available.

Responding to assembly questions from West Tyrone MLAs Daniel McCrossan and Michaela Boyle, the minister confirmed Invest NI has held discussions with a "number of companies" regarding an interest in locating to Strabane Business Park.

"Discussions between Invest NI and businesses in relation to investment plans are commercially sensitive and as such it would be inappropriate for me to provide any comment at this time. Invest NI will continue to pursue these and any future suitable property interests," Mr Hamilton said.

Sinn Fein's Michaela Boyle said she was confident a tenant would soon be secured, in light of six expressions of interest made in recent months.

"From engagement with several interested businesses I am confident we will see movement on this park in the short term," she said.

Invest NI said: “If and when a company decides to locate at Strabane Business Park, this will be formally announced by Invest NI and/or the company."
