An Everton fan has shown an act of solidarity with his arch rivals after dumping stack of Sun newspapers before jetting off on holidays.

Brian Kelly took the action after seeing a stack of the papers being handed out free at Glasgow airport.

The 47-year-old said he took the dramatic step after a friend suggested the papers should be put in a bin.

The Sun newspaper is despised by many people in Liverpool and elsewhere after it claimed Liverpool supporters picked the pockets of people killed in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

A total of 96 fans of the club died during a crush as the club played an FA Cup semi-final.

Earlier this year an inquest found those who died were unlawfully killed.

“The rivalry obviously doesn’t come into it when this is involved,” Mr Kelly said.

He told how he was returning from an Everton match when news of the tragedy broke.

“When we were coming back to Liverpool on the coaches,” he told the Daily Record.

“The only news we had was on the radio and we heard that one or two Liverpool fans had died.”
