POLICE are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man at a clay pigeon shooting club event in Co Down.

A man aged in his 60s died after a firearm was discharged near Downpatrick on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. 

It is understood that the accident occurred at Lough Money, which lies hidden in rocky countryside near Ballyalton, outside Downpatrick.

Detective Inspector Will Tate said “We will be conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this death, but initial enquiries would indicate this to be a tragic accident.”

SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie said she was "deeply saddened" at news of the man's death.

"Undoubtedly, the family and friends of this man are experiencing unspeakable grief at this time," she said.

"My deepest sympathies to the family, friends, relatives and associates of the bereaved.

"The local community in Downpatrick and further afield will stand shoulder to shoulder with the family of the bereaved and friends as a means of unequivocal support and solidarity at this tragic time.”

SDLP MLA Colin McGrath said his "thoughts and prayers are with the man's family at this time".

He added: "I will be contacting the PSNI and council to ensure that a full and robust safety investigation is conducted to see if any lessons can be drawn from this terrible event to ensure that such an accident doesn't occur again in the future and to maximise safety at such events."
