FRIENDS and colleagues of a trainee teacher who died in a road tragedy in Co Down earlier this month have raised £2,123 in his memory.

Chris Rice (29) worked at Slims Kitchen in Belfast and the company named a drink in his honour and for a week all profits from its sale were donated to Macmillan.

The company also held a charity rowing event as Mr Rice was a member of the rowing team at Queen's Univeristy Belfast.

Mr Rice was from Killyleagh and died following an accident near Saintfield on October 7.

The final year student had recently taken up a teacher training placement at his former school, St Mary's Star of the Sea Primary in Killyleagh.

The keen rower and member of the QUB rowing team had worked at Slims Healthy Kitchen on the Lisburn Road in south Belfast.

The company named a drink in his memory and for a week sales of the Carrot Top Smoothie - which was served in a cup with the student's face on it - were donated to Macmillan, the cancer charity.
