Two Co Derry brothers appeared in court on Tuesday charged with the murder of 17-year-old Blake Newland.

While 27-year-old Stephen McGlinchey and his brother Andrew (29) are jointly charged with the teenager’s murder on February 2 this year, the older brother was also charged with assaulting a police officer on the same date.

Appearing by videolink from police custody at Antrim Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena the McGlinchey brothers, from the Ballyhanedin Road in Claudy and Roe Mill Gardens in Limavady respectively, confirmed their identities and also that they understood the charges against them.

Mr Newland was stabbed multiple times in Woodland Walk on Friday night just after 21.30pm.

Three people, including Blake and a man in his 50s, were taken to hospital after police and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

On Saturday, Det Insp Mark Gibson said the PNSI responded to a report that a man in his 50s had been stabbed.

“Officers attended and while carrying out enquiries they located Blake who was also seriously injured with stab wounds in a nearby house.”

The teenager later died in hospital.

A neighbour told BBC NI that young people from the area had tried to help Blake, wrapping him in blankets until the emergency services arrived.

An area of grass in between houses was cordoned off by police, as was an alleyway running alongside houses.

The man in his 50s was said to be in a stable condition on Saturday.

In court on Tuesday a police officer said he believed he could connect each of the defendants to their respective charges and as defence solicitor Don Mahoney confirmed that neither defendant was applying for bail, District Judge Nigel Broderick remanded them into custody and adjourned the cases to 4 March.
