Bathing is now safe at Portrush’s East Strand beach following reports of slurry in the water.

Warning signs had been placed at the popular north coast beach urging people not to enter the sea due to poor water quality earlier this week.

It came after reports that slurry had been washed onto the beach on Wednesday.

But in a statement on Friday, Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council said: “Portrush is safe for bathing following confirmation from DAERA that the water sample results are within acceptable limits for bathing waters”.

The statement said that the council had been “advised by DAERA Marine & Fishery Division of a report of slurry being washed onto the site from a culvert” on Wednesday.

“As a precautionary response, council staff erected signage at the site to advise against bathing and engaged directly with local water users.”

It added that signage advising against bathing in the area had been removed.
