A young woman who was killed in a road accident in Letterkenny had only been living in Ireland since last March.

Named locally as Somali national, Layla Hussein Ali, the 22-year-old victim was involved in a collision with a car while walking close to Letterkenny on Friday night.

The accident occurred at Illistrin on the main Letterkenny to Kilmacrennan road at approximately 7pm on Friday.

The victim’s family members travelled to Donegal from Britain at the weekend and were being supported by a Garda family liaison officer.

Ms Ali’s death was the first on Donegal’s roads this year and followed a particularly tragic year for road fatalities in the county in 2023 when 10 people were killed, an increase of 22% on the previous year. A total of 184 people died in road accidents across the Republic last year, compared to 155 in 2022.

Gardaí in Milford have appealed to any witnesses to come forward. They are particularly keen to speak to road users who were travelling on the Letterkenny to Kilmacrennan road between 6pm and 7.15pm on Friday.
