51-year-old Nicholas (Nicky) Gordon, has now passed away and a murder investigation has been launched.

A man who died following a break-in in east Belfast has been named by police as Nicholas Gordon.

Mr Gordon (51), widely known as Nicky, died in hospital on Saturday, four days after a serious assault.

It took place at an apartment building in the Holywood Road area of east Belfast on Tuesday morning, May 12.

Police received reports a number of intruders entering an apartment building and attacking another male.

Two individuals – a 24-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman – were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. They were later released on bail, to allow for further police enquiries, and have since been released unconditionally.

The PSNI, which launched a murder inquiry, said in a statement: “Our thoughts are with Nicholas’ family and friends at this sad time as they try to come to terms with their loss, and as we continue to examine the exact circumstances of what happened.

“Two people arrested on suspicion of offences including aggravated burglary with intent to commit grievous bodily harm have since been released on bail – and we continue to work at pace to seek others who may be involved."

Policing Board member Peter McReynolds, an Alliance MLA in east Belfast, said: “I am deeply shocked to learn about this horrifying incident. My thoughts are with the man who has sadly lost his life.”

“I’d implore anyone with any information that may help PSNI in their investigations to please get in touch with them, or report it anonymously via Crimestoppers.”

Police believe that the attack took place around 4:45am on the morning of May 12 and they are appealing for anyone who was in the Hollywood Road at the time and who might have relevant information to come forward.
