Residents have been allowed to return to their homes in Downpatrick after emergency services dealt with a gas leak.

Police said English Street, which was closed during the operation on Tuesday night, has been re-opened.

A number of homes and buildings were evacuated and members of the public were advised to avoid the area.

On Wednesday morning, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Residents, who were evacuated for a number of hours to allow for safety checks, were advised they could return to their homes before midnight”.
