Co Down teenager (18) killed in road crash remembered as ‘lovely young man’

The funeral is due to take place on Tuesday of a young man killed in a road crash in Co Down.

Jamie Marks (18), who was from the Downpatrick area, died in a single car collision near Castlewellan on Friday afternoon.

Tributes have remembered him as a “such a lovely young man” and “one of a kind”.

Police said the teenager, known as Jay, was driving a blue Vauxhall Corsa on the Ballylough Road when the crash happened.

Family and friends are due to gather for his funeral at St Patrick’s Church Downpatrick on Tuesday at 11am.

A death notice described him as the “dearly beloved son” and a “much loved brother”.

He was a member of the Castlewellan and District Darts League, which posted a tribute to the young man on social media on Sunday.



It wrote: “We in the Castlewellan Darts League were deeply saddened at the tragic news on Friday of the untimely passing of Jamie Marks.

“Jay, a current playing member in the league with Mackins Bar, Newcastle will be sorely missed by his team mates and everyone associated with the Castlewellan League.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to his parents Paddy & Donna, his sister Leasa, his brother David and the entire family circle.”

Many others also posted tributes on social media of their shock at the death of the teenager.

One woman wrote: “Unbelievable I am so so sorry for your incredible loss”, while another added that it was “absolutely heartbreaking”.

PSNI Detective Sergeant Amanda McIvor said: “Colleagues from other emergency services attended, but sadly Jay Marks was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Our officers closed the road for a time as enquiries were conducted at the scene. It has since reopened to traffic.

“Following the tragic death of Jay, we are appealing for information and witnesses.

“We would particularly ask anyone who was travelling in the area between 2.30pm and 3pm to review any dash-cam footage they may have captured and make contact with us by calling 101.

“The reference number to quote is 1074 of 02/02/24.”

He is survived by his parents Donna and Patrick, siblings Leasa and David and family circle.
