A Garda officer has been suspended while an investigation into a fatal hit-and-run collision in Co Louth takes place.

A man in his 40s died after the collision at Rathmullen Road in Drogheda.

He was found unresponsive shortly after 2.30am on Sunday and was pronounced dead following the arrival of emergency services. The vehicle involved had failed to stop at the scene.

A Gardaí spokesperson said a vehicle of interest has been recovered, which will undergo technical examination.

No official Garda car was involved in the incident, nor was any on-duty Garda officer.

The scene was preserved for examination on Sunday by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, with local traffic diversions are in place.

A post-mortem on the victim will take place, and Gardaí have appealed for witnesses or those with dash-cam footage to contact them.

A garda officer has been suspended and the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission said it was investigating after receiving a referral from Gardaí.
