A FORMER school principal with 16 years in teaching has taken up the top education role in W5.

Scott Howes ran a school in South Gloucestershire before taking up the post of public engagement and education manager at the science centre.

He said he was looking forward to using his skills and experience in the schools sector to develop the educational possibilities at W5.

Mr Howes will head up the team of educators at the centre to promote learning opportunities for children and adults in science, technology, engineering and maths (stem).

He said he believed his experience in frontline teaching gave him insight into the requirements of both teachers and pupils. In his most recent role as a head teacher his task was to build up the school's reputation, raising standards and pupil numbers and the experience he gained will be used to increase awareness and interest in learning for adults and children linked to stem.

"This is an exciting time to be at W5. It's the beginning of a new phase of development, an opportunity to stimulate young minds and make them aware of the relevance of science in their daily lives as well as the extensive opportunities for stem linked careers," he said.

"As a frontline educator I can see the tremendous potential to spark curiosity, provoke questions, provide fascinating answers and expose how science and technology is both accessible and important to each of us."
