Pupils from Rathmore Grammar School will compete to win a £3,000 prize for a charity as part of this year's Philanthropy Fortnight.

Eight groups of Year 9 pupils will each give a presentation on their chosen charity with the winning organisation receiving the cash boost.

The event at Rathmore on April 26 has been organised by the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) , which provides funds for 15 participating schools throughout the year.

In Northern Ireland this year, 1,800 young people have completed the project with £45,000 directed to charities working across communities.

The Year 9 pupils have researched the needs in their communities, looking at issues of self-harm and suicide, childhood cancer, poverty and social exclusion, disabilities and ill health. They have identified a range of charities including St Vincent de Paul and Children's Heartbeat Trust.

"We are an active citizenship programme that raises awareness amongst young people about philanthropy and their local community," said Lauren Lamberton of YPI NI.

"Each participating school, each year is responsible for directing a £3,000 YPI Grant to a local charity through a unique programme of team work, research and competitions. YPI NI is all about creativity and passion, leaving the four walls of the classroom behind, and supporting the issues young people care about.

"Philanthropy Fortnight, the two week series of workshops, seminars and networking events from April 18 to 29, celebrates the generosity, time, commitment and support that thousands of Northern Ireland people give every day to causes close to their heart."

Regional events include a celebration of the Derry-based Acorn Fund, set up by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland to build on the success of the City of Culture 2013 and a celebration of Fermanagh's rich tradition of philanthropy by the Fermanagh Trust.
