AN Irish charity has emphasised the need to support the entire family during Children's Hospice Week.

With support from Ireland and Leinster rugby player Gary Ringrose, the LauraLynn charity announced their campaign message of "Caring for the Child...Supporting the Family," which highlights the role played by siblings, parents and wider family.

As Ireland's only children's hospice, the charity provides tailored hospice and palliative care to around 500 children with life-limiting conditions across the island of Ireland.

Services include counselling, music and play therapy as well as targeted therapeutic care to children, parents and siblings.

Paul is father to Natalia, one of the children who attends LauraLynn.

‘’LauraLynn gives us that little break and it gives Natalia a break. We don’t have to be clock watching," he said.

"We can just relax because we know that Natalia’s needs are being met 101 per cent each and every moment that she’s here in LauraLynn.’’

The charity has said it is now supporting more families than ever before, following a 139 per cent increase in referrals compared to last year.

LauraLynn CEO, Kerry McLaverty, commented: “At LauraLynn when a child is referred to our service, we don’t just accept the child, but the whole family as a unit.

"Looking after a child with a life-limiting condition is one of the most challenging things a family can face.

"Beyond the physical challenges and medical needs of their child, the family and extended family are often dealing with the emotional impact that the child’s condition can have on them.

"LauraLynn’s approach is all-inclusive, ensuring that while we care for the child with the life-limiting condition, we are also there to fully support all family members through their journey."

In 2022, the charity received €2.3m of state funding, covering around a third of their operational costs, with the rest generated though fundraising.
