THE recall of 2,500 patients by the Belfast health trust is not the only one in recent years.

Professor Philip Lamey, a former consultant at the Royal Victoria Hospital's School of Dentistry, was struck off in 2014 and found guilty of more than 100 malpractice charges.

Prof Lamey was removed from his job in Belfast in 2011 after serious concerns were raised about his work.

A total of 135 of Prof Lamey's patients had to be recalled in 2011 after 35 developed cancer. Four of the patients subsequently died.

The General Dental Council said there were 215 allegations of malpractice made against Prof Lamey, with 110 of found to be proved.

In 2015, he appealed being struck off by the GDC. It was quashed in the High Court and substituted with a six-month suspension.

In June 2013, more than 100 patients were recalled amid fears of misdiagnosis at the accident and emergency unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The alarm was raised after a consultant voiced his worries about the possible oversight of a fracture in a patient’s X-ray.

A locum doctor, who had been working in the department for six weeks, was reported to the General Medical Council and agreed not to work until the files of patients he had treated were reviewed.

In December 2013, the Belfast health trust also recalled 1,113 urology patients as a precaution after a review of a number of patient notes.

The affected patients had attended Belfast City Hospital for a bladder camera test/cystoscopy during 2012 and 2013.
