A CO Derry teenager who helped front a campaign to raise awareness of the rare bone cancer Ewing sarcoma, has lost her battle against the illness.

Alexandra Johnston, who celebrated her 16th birthday on New Year’s Day, died yesterday following a five-year struggle with the cancer which affects teenagers and young adults.

Ewing sarcoma awareness group, Paul’s Campaign, led tributes to their “bravest warrior" yesterday on Facebook.

“Alexandra has most definitely put up the most bravest, toughest and inspiring fight from she was first diagnosed. She has inspired not just the people of Derry, Ireland but people from all over the world.

“We had a special bond with this amazing little princess and she will forever hold a piece of our hearts.”

First diagnosed with cancer in 2013, the Claudy teenager's family was told she had just three months to live. However, while she defied all medical predictions to be declared cancer-free, the illness made a return.

Alexandra, who was known by the affectionate name Ya Ya, consistently surprised medical staff with her resilience and strength despite the punishing therapies and chemotherapy.

News of her death sparked a huge response on social media. Former SDLP assembly member, Pat Ramsey described her as a “very outgoing, lovely and highly regarded young lady.”

Belfast priest Fr Paddy McCafferty, who got to know Alexandra when he travelled to Lourdes with her some years ago, also paid tribute.

“She is now free from all pain and in the presence of the Glory of God, seeing the Lord’s face and enfolded forever in His love,” he said.
