Belfast man denies trying to kill his former partner

A Belfast man has denied trying to kill his ex-partner whom he allegedly left in a coma.

Standing in the dock of Downpatrick Crown Court, Michael O'Connor (31) confirmed his identity and that he had been told about the level of credit a defendant obtains for early guilty pleas.

The formalities completed, the court clerk put the two charges to O'Connor accusing him of the attempted murder of mother-of-one Jolene Corr on November 30 last year and causing her grievous bodily harm with intent on the same date.

The 26-year-old beautician was in a coma for months and has been left with severe and life changing brain damage after she was attacked in a house in the Thomas Russell Park area of Downpatrick.

O'Connor, originally from Westrock Grove in west Belfast, but now whose address was given as c/o Maghaberry prison, is understood to be Ms Corr's ex-partner.

Following the short arraignment, Judge Piers Grant remanded O'Connor back into custody and said he would review the case next week.
