A YOUTH club in east Belfast is to dedicate a plaque to the memory of a popular young football coach who died earlier this year from head injuries following a night out.

Friends and family of Short Strand man Conan Anderson will come together to unveil the plaque at Doyle Youth Club on the Mountpottinger Road.

The 22 year-old suffered serious head injuries following a night out at Thompson’s Garage nightclub in the early hours of February 6.

Although he managed to make his way home, concerned relatives later brought him to hospital but he died almost a fortnight later from severe head injuries.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with his manslaughter.

A sports development student at Belfast Metropolitan College, Conan had dedicated much of his time to coaching at Doyle FC in the Short Strand.

Tomorrow night family and friends will come together with staff and young people from Doyle Youth Club to see a plaque unveiled in his honour.

The club will also be naming its 3G pitch `Conan Park' while a memorial bench, named `Conan's Bench', will also be unveiled.

Paul McCrory, Senior Youth Leader at Doyle Youth Club, said everyone wanted to keep Mr Anderson's memory alive.

"Conan was a young lad who attended our youth club and like many hundreds, there was potential for him to do so much more in life," he said.

"He rose through the ranks and became a valued member of staff, giving up his time to help other people and was tragically taken from us. What we are doing in many ways is to make sure his memory, and contribution he has made, lives on."

Shauna McEvoy, Mr Anderson's sister-in-law, said Conan's contribution to helping others was "still shining through".

"We just want to keep him in everyone's thoughts and think about all the good work he did," she said.

The unveiling takes place at Doyle Youth Centre at 7pm/
