A SINN Féin councillor left seriously ill after being struck down with meningitis is making “positive progress” in her recovery.

Naomi Bailie, who served as the first chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, was admitted to hospital earlier this month and diagnosed with the potential fatal brain condition.

The 30-year-old, who had previously acted as an advisor to Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard, was later rushed to the Royal Victoria Hospital’s intensive care unit, with her condition described as “critical”.

While the mother-of-one from Downpatrick, remains in hospital, council colleague Willie Clarke said she was showing signs of improvement, despite concerns for the Queens University politics graduate.

Councillor Clarke told the Irish News: “Naomi is trying to build up her strength with the continuing support of her tireless family and friends.

“This has been a traumatic experience for the family, who are hoping and praying that Naomi continues on the road to recovery. She is making positive progress, and is talking and eating, but obviously is still very weak.”

He added: “We are all hoping that the new year continues to bring good news for her loved ones.”

Earlier this month, the councillor's mother Shelia, praised the work of medical staff treating her daughter.

“She continues to be cared for by an excellent team of doctors and nurses,” she said.

“We are all very moved by the prayers and support from the wider community.”

Meanwhile pictures have emerged of Crossmaglen Rangers player Ruairi O'Neill, sitting up beside his hospital bed, after waking up from a coma after he struck down by meningitis.

The St Mary's University College was left fighting for his life in the Royal Victoria Hospital after falling ill recently. Prayer vigils took place in Crossmaglen as messages of support poured in from the GAA community.

One tweet accompanying a picture of Ruiari sitting up yesterday said: "Great news that the young cub ruairi o Neill of @crossrangers is now conscious - keep fighting young man we are all behind you.#13club".
