A MAN has been remanded in custody in Spain charged in connection with the murder of Gary Hutch.

James Quinn (34), a well-known gangland figure from Dublin, was arrested at Madrid Airport on Thursday and questioned about the murder of Hutch.

He appeared in court in Fuengirola yesterday, but the hearing was closed to the media and the public.

Following a brief examination of the case the judge remanded him in custody for the continuing investigation of the murder.

Hutch was shot dead at an apartment complex near Marbella last September.

The killing sparked a feud which led to a further nine murders, including the shooting of David Byrne at the Regency Hotel in Dublin.

Quinn's arrest in Spain was part of a joint Garda operation with Spain's La Guardia Civil.

Gardaí yesterday said the "investigation by the Guardia Civil is at an early stage and is under the control of a judge".

Searches were carried out in Spain targetting the international crime gang headed by Christy Kinahan and houses in several areas of Dublin were also targeted in the raids.

A luxury yacht and a Bentley car were seized by Spanish authorities along with cash, drugs and a firearm.
