A DERRY-based charity is to be one of the beneficiaries of 1,650 mile cycle from Glasgow to Lisbon to commemorate Celtic's European Cup victory of 1967.

'The Road to Lisbon' cycle, which takes place next May, will see participants leave from Celtic Park and journey through France and Spain, before arriving in Portugal 19 days later at the hallowed site of the Estádio Nacional, the site of the Celtic's solitary European Cup triumph.

In the most famous night in the club's history Celtic beat Inter Milan 2-1 to lift the coveted trophy.

The cycle - led by supporters Paul Muldoon and David Shearan, Celtic fans from Glasgow and Newcastle respectively - will raise funds for a series of charities including Derry based Children in Crossfire.

The charity supports projects helping some of the most vulnerable children on the planet that suffer from the injustice of poverty.

Richard Moore Director at Children in Crossfire said he was delighted the charity was set to benefit from the cycle.

"The money raised from this event will have a significant impact on vulnerable children in Tanzania and Ethiopia. Children that don’t have access to food, water, medicine and education. I think it’s wonderful that in celebrating Celtic’s amazing victory 50 years ago, that the organisers are helping create a legacy which will change the lives of so many vulnerable children”.

Speaking about the event, co-organiser, Paul Muldoon encouraged people to sign up and take part.

“This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity," he said.

"With over nine months of training opportunities before we roll out of Celtic Park, we would encourage as many people as possible to take part in one or more of the 19 legs," he added.
