The Orange Order is operating "shebeens" in some of its halls by selling alcohol without a legal drinks licence, it has been claimed.

While only one Orange Hall in Belfast has a full drinks licence, it has been claimed that illegal bars are operating in a number of others. They include Clifton Street and the West Belfast Orange Hall based on the Shankill.

The Irish News understands that a bar is also in operation in Sandy Row Orange Hall in south Belfast.

West Belfast Orange Hall regularly hosts 'sash bash' fundraising events to raise money for local bands.

It is believed only North Belfast Orange Hall based in Alexandra Park Avenue has a drinks licence which has been renewed regularly since 1995.

Earlier this month the Orange Order in Belfast launched a major campaign to encourage members and supporters to reduce the amount of alcohol taken during their annual Twelfth of July parade.

The Orange Order said a 'think tank' was set up to plan the campaign with the PSNI, Pubs of Ulster and public health authorities consulted.

However, former senior Orangeman Rev Brian Kennaway said the campaign was hypocritical.

"I note with interest ... the attempt by the County Grand Lodge of Belfast to deal with the excessive drinking on the Twelfth," said Rev Kennaway.

"The removal of these unlicensed drinking clubs from the Belfast Orange Halls would set a better example to our youth, as well as sending out a clear message that the Orange Institution is truly Christ centered, Bible based and Church grounded".

Rev Kennaway has often spoke out about a need for members of the Orange order its return to its core values and principles.

He added that it "may appear hypocritical in the eyes of some" for the Orange Order to launch an initiative in Belfast where only one hall has a drinks licence, adding that others appeared to be "shebeens"

A spokesman for the County Grand Orange Lodge of Belfast, said: "Orange halls apply on occasion for licences if and when required for individual functions.

"If there is any evidence of alcohol being sold illegally on Orange premises, it will be investigated fully by the County Grand Lodge," the spokesman added.
