THE north's new education minister revealed little detail about his plans on his first day, promising only to help all children reach their full potential.

As the new DUP minister visited his former school, Bangor Grammar, on Thursday the Department of Education marked the event by issuing a press release claiming "Peter Weir sets out key priorities".

There was little specific detail included in it, however.

Mr Weir takes over at a time when education budgets are under tremendous strain.

Schools are stretched due to repeated cuts and head teachers are also being left to pick up the bill for for increases in employers' contributions to National Insurance and superannuation which were previously covered by the Department of Education.

Heads teachers have warned they are facing "financial meltdown" with some claiming they will be left half a million pounds in the red.

"As education minister, I do not underestimate the challenges that lie ahead in my aim of a first class education system that delivers for all our children," Mr Weir said.

"The Executive is facing very challenging financial pressures which will impact on school budgets.

"My priority is to ensure funding is targeted at helping and supporting our children and young people and I will work with my department, the Education Authority and schools to make sure this happens."

In its assembly election manifesto, the DUP promised to deliver equality for all sectors. This would involve finding a "fairer and better funding formula for schools".

Academic selection is among the other issues expected to be looked at closely. Mr Weir has already said a single 11-plus test is worth exploring.

"Every child is different and all deserve the best start in life. The bringing together of a wider range of child-focused responsibilities in the restructured Department of Education reflects the Executive's commitment to supporting all of our children and young people," he added.

"As minister I am looking forward to working with our schools; our early childhood education and childcare providers; and our youth services to ensure that, together, we can meet the needs and nurture the aspirations of our children and young people.

"The future stability of our society and the success of our economy depend on there being a high quality education system that can stand alongside the best in the world.

"I am ambitious for our children and young people and determined to ensure that educational outcomes improve across every part of Northern Ireland in every school in every sector."
