THE family of an IRA man shot dead by the British Army will hold an independent commemoration in Derry this weekend.

George McBrearty (23) died along with another republican, Charles Maguire (21), during a gun battle with members of the 14th Intelligence Company in Derry in May 1981.

The family organised event drew hundreds of republicans from all backgrounds last year and the McBrearty family say they hope that will be repeated this year.

The IRA man’s 86-year-old mother Bridie is also expected at the commemoration at the republican memorial in the city’s Creggan estate.

Prominent Irish America Martin Galvin, who one headed up republican fundraising group Noraid, is expected to speak at the event.

The republican’s brother, Danny McBrearty, described last year’s event as a success and appealed to anyone interested to come along to this year's event.

“We the McBrearty family were very pleased that a commemoration for our brother George was able to unite everyone with great dignity and respect,” he said.

The commemoration will take place at 1pm on Saturday.
