THE man whose torso was found in a suitcase in a canal in Co Kildare was named last night as 33-year-old Kenneth O'Brien from west Dublin.

Mr O'Brien, who was from Clondalkin, was reported missing to gardaí on Saturday although it is believed he disappeared on Friday.

His dismembered torso was found in a suitcase in the Grand Canal near Celbridge on Saturday afternoon.

The dark suitcase was spotted in the water by two people walking along the canal bank.

Mr O'Brien's torso had been wrapped in plastic before being put in the suitcase.

Gardaí are still trying to establish a motive for the brutal killing.

Mr O'Brien was a father and had a partner. A JCB driver, he had only returned from Australia last month.

Officers said last night they want to trace Mr O'Brien's final movements.

It is understood he told his family he was going to work in the country before he went missing.
