THE funeral of former Derry civil rights’ leader Paddy “Bogside” Doherty will take place tomorrow.

Mr Doherty (89) died at his home in the city’s Bogside on Thursday. A key figure in the emerging civil rights’ movement in the late 1960s, Mr Doherty came to widespread prominence during the Free Derry era and the Battle of the Bogside.

He was a founder of the Inner City Trust in Derry which was established to renovate buildings and sites within the old city which had been destroyed during the Troubles. As well as enhancing the city, the trust used the work to train young people in trades and crafts.

A number of what would now be considered landmark buildings in Derry were developed through the Inner City Trust, including the O’Doherty Tower -now the Tower Museum - the Calgach Centre and the Craft Village.

Mr Doherty’s funeral will take place from his home at Westland Street at 11.45am tomorrow morning to St Eugene’s Cathedral for Requiem Mass at 12.30pm. He will be buried immediately afterwards at Derry city cemetery.
