THREE friends killed in a tragic road crash in Co Down are to be remembered at a special charity GAA match.

Family and friends of Peter Hughes, Gavin Sloan and Conall Havern will take part in the game in memory of the three young men who died in August.

The pals, all students at Queen's University, were killed in a two-car collision on the A1 dual carriageway between Dromore and Banbridge.

They had been returning home from Belfast after finalising their accommodation for the forthcoming academic year.

Mr Hughes (19) was a member of Dromintee GAC, while Conall Havern (20) had played for Saval Gaelic Club and Mr Sloan (20) for Attical GAC.

All three sides along with Mr Hughes' former school, St Paul's High School in Bessbrook, are to come together for the memorial charity football.

The match will see a south Armagh select team face a side from south Down - with the players made up of family and friends of the three students.

The game is due to take place on January 2 at Dromintee GAC with organisers also designing a special jersey that incorporates the three students and their individual local clubs.

Proceeds from the match will go to Head Injury Support, a group which helps people who have suffered head injuries in the local community.

In a statement, organisers said they wanted to hold an event to "remember the men".

"This will be held on the 2nd January at Dromintee football grounds and will comprise of two teams - a south Armagh select and a south Down select made up from friends and family," they said.

"We are very impressed with the work that the Head Injury Support have done to support people who have suffered head injuries in the local community.

"Therefore we plan to raise money for this charity. Raffle tickets will also be sold with the chance to win prizes.

"We are also in the process of designing a jersey that incorporates the three men and their individual local clubs. With a crest design resembling a holly tree.

"A symbol that connects them all through the year they spent in the same accommodation in Elms at Queen's University.

"Both Conall and Peter were chemical engineering students who studied and worked hard in order to achieve their dream job.

"Gavin was also a student of Queen's, studying law of which he spent countless hours reading books back to front - a model student."
