THE girlfriend of an Irishman shot during the IS terror attacks on Paris has told how they "played dead" as a gunman slaughtered people lying beside them.

Katie Healy, from Co Louth now living in Cork, was in the Bataclan theatre with boyfriend David Nolan when gunmen burst into the venue and began firing into the crowd.

Ms Healy said last night they were "beyond lucky" to be alive after Mr Nolan was shot in the leg.

Attackers, armed with guns and explosives, opened fire after holding around 100 people hostage in the theatre during the most deadly of the Paris attacks on Friday night.

Ms Healy told RTÉ after they heard gunfire they "lay on the ground among the bodies of everyone who stood with us and just played dead".

"We're not sure exactly at what point David was shot. He threw himself on top of me twice, both times he fell and covered me, making sure my head and my chest were covered as best as he can.

"It became quiet and you could hear everybody moaning and single shots started to fire and we realised that the gunmen were walking around killing everyone who lay with us. We saw the foot of a gunman who walked past us.

"We said our goodbyes and as we realised what was about to happen to us someone opened a door somewhere and we just ran."

She said she did not know her boyfriend had been shot until they escaped on to the street.

"Eventually a kind, kind girl let us into a gated apartment," she said.

A doctor in the apartment block treated Mr Nolan's wounds. Ms Healy said her boyfriend had undergone surgery and would need more when they return to Ireland.

"We're beyond lucky," she said.

She added: "What we'll never forget is the people who died."
