IRA suspect killed Garda in 'murder-suicide'

Dissident republican Crevan Mackin was named locally as the gunman behind a murder-suicide at a house in Omeath, Co Louth where a garda in his 30s was shot dead

A MAN charged with IRA membership shot dead a garda and seriously injured his girlfriend last night before turning the gun on himself in a murder-suicide.

Crevan Mackin was named locally as the gunman behind a shooting at about 6pm at a house in Omeath, Co Louth, close to the border.

The 24-year-old dissident, pictured, killed himself in the shooting after murdering an on-duty garda, who was aged in his thirties and a married father of three young children.

Mackin’s girlfriend, said to be originally from Newry, was seriously ill in hospital last night.

It is understood gardaí had been called to the property in the Mullach Alainn estate on the Cooley Peninsula after reports of a domestic disturbance.

Mackin was said to be originally from the village of Hilltown in Co Down. In January he was brought before the Special Criminal Court charged with IRA membership.

He was said to have lived in Mullach Alainn with his partner.

An area around the house was sealed off for forensic examination last night.

Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, who represents the Louth constituency, said: “My thoughts and sympathies are with the families of those who have died.”

Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan said she was “deeply saddened” to hear of her colleague’s murder.

“At this time my thoughts and prayers and those of the entire Garda service are with his family, friends and colleagues,” she said.

“This incident highlights the unique nature of the job carried out by the men and women of An Garda Síochána and the dangers they face every day.”

PSNI chief constable George Hamilton tweeted: “Thoughts are with our Garda colleagues tonight. An officer paying the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”

The shooting happened only a few miles from where Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe was fatally shot during a robbery at a credit union on January 25 2013.

Frances Fitzgerald, the Republic’s justice minister, said she was appalled by the loss of life in Omeath.

“The fact that a garda has laid down his life while protecting the community is a cause of great sadness. His death will be mourned by the entire nation, grateful for the service which he gave to it,” she said.
