THE funeral will take place today of a former Fermanagh council chairman and Sinn Fe??in councillor who died at the weekend.

Paul Corrigan died peacefully aged 81 on Saturday at his home near Enniskillen.

He was a Fermanagh councillor for two terms from 1983 to 1991 and among the first Sinn F??in councillors to sit on the council.

Mr Corrigan was chairman of Fermanagh District Council in 1987 at the time of the Enniskillen bomb which killed 12 people.

His funeral will take place at 11am at St Patrick's Church, Killesher, with burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness described him as a "committed republican" who was a councillor during "some of the most difficult and challenging years of the conflict".

Sinn F??in president Gerry Adams said Mr Corrigan was active in the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

"Paul was a dedicated republican who gave many years of activism to the struggle for democracy, equality and for Irish unity," he said.

"He was an exemplary Sinn F??in Councillor and chair of Fermanagh District Council."
