Funerals of cousins killed in car crash to be held at weekend

A FIVE year old girl who died after being hit by a car in Co Down has been named as Katie Grace Bogle.

The schoolgirl was hit by a grey Hyundai in Irvine Park in Bangor at around 5pm on Thursday evening.

It is understood she had been playing on a scooter when the accident happened.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact officers in Bangor on the non-emergency 101 number.

Sergeant Brian Shankey said: "The driver of the car has been spoken to by police and is helping with our enquiries. The young girl was taken by ambulance to hospital following the collision, but died from her injuries."

North Down DUP MLA Peter Weir said it was a "terrible tragedy to see a life end so early."

Alliance MLA Stephen Farry also offered his sympathies saying the community had been left in shock.

The Deputy Mayor of North Down and Ards, the UUPs Carl McClean, expressed his condolences yesterday at the accident.

Meanwhile, the funerals of two cousins killed in a road crash near Derry will take place this weekend.

Aaron McDonald (19) and Michael McDonald (21), from Donemana in Co Tyrone died on Wednesday morning on the main Derry to Strabane road.

It is understood that the two cousins were back seat passengers in a Volkswagen Golf when it hit a tree and broke up between Newbuildings and Magheramason at 3.30am on Wednesday.

Michael's brother Dylan McDonald (18), who was driving the car, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving but was later released pending further inquiries.

Dylan and a 16 year-old girl, who was also in the car, were both transferred to Altnagelvin Hospital but released the following day.

Aaron will be buried this afternoon from St Jamess Parish Church in Earlsgift and interred at Mountcastle cemetery, several miles outside Donemana while Michael's funeral will be held at the same church on Sunday.

He will be laid to rest in the burial plot at Earlsgift.

Police have advised motorists set to travel through Donemana between 1.30pm and 4pm on both days to seek alternative routes.
